Sometimes in studying the Reformation, we forget that the Reformation is not for just for others, it is also for us. In evangelism and engaging others in conversations, it can be useful for us to ask someone else for something that they can do for us. Ephesians 2 says that at one time we were all dead in our trespasses. The heart of the Reformation is that the Scriptures have authority and salvation is a gift and not earned. Even the Devil knows the gospel and the Scriptures are true. However, only intellectually believing will not save us. If we count on our performance to make us acceptable to God, we are lost. Instead, if we come to Jesus and realize that we have sinned and are in need of a Savior, then we will find salvation. If we want to live a Godly life (and if we are born again we should want to live a Godly life) we will be persecuted. Whatever suffering we go through, we must realize that it will be short. When life begins to get difficult, we should remember that thousands of people went before us and were persecuted so that we can have God's word in our language.
